From More History, Mystery, and Hauntings of Southern Illinois by Bruce Cline.
On the night of January 5, 2000, Police in the St Clair County received numerous reports of a triangular shaped unidentified object in the sky. The UFO was reported to be two stories high and about the length of a football field. It was estimated that the UFO was flying at an altitude of about 1000 feet. The sightings were centered in an area that extended from Lebanon, Shiloh, Dupo and Millstadt.
The UFO sighting drew national attention and a week later a special team of investigators headed by a former FBI agent was brought in to determine if the UFO was an alien spacecraft. The team interviewed several credible witnesses including police officers. The descriptions of the UFO by witnesses were not what would be expected if the objects were conventional aircraft. The lighting on the UFO was not consistent with U.S. regulations for lighting of aircraft and the fight patterns far exceeded any known type of aircraft.
Officials at nearby Scott Air Force Base had no explanation for the UFO and said that the air traffic control towers at Scott Air Force Base and nearby Mid America Airport were both shut down at the time of the sightings.
Was the UFO some sort of Top Secret military aircraft from Scott Air Force Base or could it have been visitors from outer space? Your guess is as good as ours.
