It was one of those “dark and stormy” nights (for real) when I was a young embalmer on midnight shift. I had been called out in the middle of the night to make a removal at a local hospital. There was a torrential spring thunderstorm raging outside as I was embalming the fresh corpse in the basement Prep Room of the funeral home that I worked at. Lightning would flash soon to be followed by the loud crash of thunder. The corpse was not co-operating and I had to perform a 6 point injection.
Needless to say, this made matters very messy. I had blood splattered all over the embalming table, the floor and even some on the walls. I needed to go to the back room of the basement to get the mop and bucket to clean up the mess. Unknown to me at the time, the sewer in the back room had backed up with all the water from the storm outside. As I opened the door, I noticed that the lights were off in the back room and I had to take about 10 steps to where the light cord was. I noticed that the floor was very wet.
Just as I flicked on the lights, I got the shock of my life…..the entire floor was flooded with BLOOD!!!!!! All the the blood from the dead body had backed up through the sewer and was now surrounding my feet! OH, THE HORRORS OF IT ALL!!!!! I was really caught off guard that time.
